Khal Torabully is a Mauritian poet, essayist, filmmaker, and theorist who writes primarily in French. He coined the term “Coolitude” to describe the cultural, linguistic, and imaginative worlds formed by indentured labor and its diasporas. His poetry draws on Mauritian Creole, South Asian languages, French, and neologism to address uprooting, oceanic passage, memory, and reconciliation. He has published more than twenty-five books and has developed Coolitude across poetry, essays, and film.
