Behold the Eyes
Celebrates the extraordinary range and enduring power of photography, across its origins in the nineteenth century to the present day.
“Behold the universe,” invites Marcel Proust, “through the eyes of another, of a hundred others.” This new collection, bringing together works from across the history of photography, takes Proust’s command as its inspiration, offering its readers new eyes through which to see the world. More than a historical survey of photography, Behold the Eyes of a Hundred Others is an invitation to look differently.
The catalogue features more than 100 masterworks from the private collection of Richard Grosbard, spanning from photography’s origins in the nineteenth century to the present day. It demonstrates the incredible range and variety of photography throughout its history, encompassing portraiture, architecture, industrial and urban landscapes, photograms, abstraction, sculpture, landscape, and still life. Rather than proceeding chronologically, however, these diverse pieces are organized thematically, bringing together artists across generations, geographies, and photographic traditions. Moving between historical documentation, experimentation, and art, Behold the Eyes of a Hundred Others reveals photography’s singular ability to reshape how we understand people, places, and moments.
