The first comprehensive overview of Czech and Moravian map collections gathered into a single, accessible reference work.
Czech Map Collections provides a clear overview of the history, content, and accessibility of nineteen Czech and Moravian map collections kept by archives, libraries, museums, and universities. The most important cartographic collections and unique items are presented, including printed and manuscript maps, atlases, plans, globes, and vedute. Region-wise, Bohemia and Moravia are the most represented areas, but there are also examples of maps of the Mediterranean, the Alpine regions, and Asia. Descriptions and analyses are interspersed with numerous reproductions of old maps, plans, globes, and vedute from the period between 1518 and 1920. In addition, important cartographers and publishers, as well as curators or patrons who have fundamentally participated in the creation and development of map collections, are briefly introduced. The book also provides information on the physical and digital availability of selected map collections as well as practical information on services for researchers.
