Nicolas Guagnini

Ceramics

A decade of conceptual ceramics by multimedia artist Nicolas Guagnini.

This catalog of New York-based artist Nicolas Guagnini thoroughly documents eight of his exhibitions, providing a chronological view of the development of the work. Guagnini’s work in ceramics is presented alongside experiments in dance, typography, and performance, forming a rich dialogue across media.

Using one of the oldest artistic mediums, Guagnini creates assemblages of ceramic anatomical parts to explore themes of masculinity, psychoanalysis, and our relationship to antiquity. He deploys custom-developed glazes, decals, troupe l’oleic, and a variety of innovative techniques. Specific installation components, such as glass, tinted wood pedestals, wall texts, and interventions on the gallery floor using paper and coins, further animate his work. An extensive interview with the artist by curator Matilde Guidelli- Guidi and an essay by Michaela de Lacze Mohrmann illuminate this complex web of materials and themes.
