A multidisciplinary study of the experiences and social lives of Portuguese labor migrants in Switzerland.

Drawing on psychosocial and life course approaches, this book explores the experiences of Portuguese labor migrants in Switzerland as they confront discrimination, particularly within institutional settings. It analyzes the strategies migrants develop to sustain their migration projects, negotiate social identities, and respond to injustice across different stages of life. By combining social identity theory with a life course approach, the book offers an innovative framework for understanding identity management in migration contexts. Special attention is given to formerly underexplored social creativity strategies, highlighting their role in coping, adaptation, resistance, and potential social transformation. Based on a robust mixed-methods methodology, including life story data collection, this study expands research on migration, discrimination, and identity through both theoretical and methodological innovation. Focusing on a migrant population that remains understudied, the book makes an important contribution to contemporary debates on migration, institutional inequality, and social identity.
