Alexander von Humboldt’s Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain
Humboldt’s Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain, Volume 1 and Volume 2 is a key text among Alexander von Humboldt’s voluminous writings on the Americas. In fact, it is the book—both in French and in its initial English translation—that first made Humboldt famous among his contemporaries by causing a stir among investors with an interest in gold and silver mining in the New World.
The Alexander von Humboldt in English Project’s annotated translation of the Essai Politique sur le royaume de la Nouvelle Espagne is the first complete English edition of Humboldt’s revised text. See the Essai’s publication history.
